California Disaster Relief Teams Needed

Mass Feeding
Volunteers trained in mass feeding are needed for a California Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief unit that has been activated and is stationed in Chico for wildfires burning out of control in Northern California.

The first team is on site and preparing as many as 2,000 meals daily. Volunteers are needed for an indefinite period, according to CSBC Disaster Relief officials.

Persons interested in volunteering for the feeding ministry should contact off-site coordinators Clint and Renee McKinley by e-mail at c-r.mckinley@sbcglobal.net. Information that should be included in the e-mail is:

  • Full name
  • Contact phone numbers – home, work and cell
  • Dates of availability
  • Home

Cleanup
Disaster Relief teams are needed for cleanup after the fires in Central Coast (Santa Cruz area) and Northern California (Paradise area). Through the week we hope to have eight-member teams working and on Saturday we hope to have several join us to clean homesites.

We do all this to glorify Jesus in the presence of people who are hurting and need help. This gives us an opportunity to share Jesus and His love. If you have not been trained, we will train you. Trained DR chaplains are needed for each team.

July 13 through completion

  1. Team needs to stay for one week.
  2. Individuals need to be self-contained (sleeping bag, air mattress, towels, etc.) since you will be staying in a church (lunches and showers are provided). Generally, dinner is up to the individual. Team members are encouraged to use the church kitchen to prepare evening meals for those in the field.
  3. Teams are encouraged to travel together to save on gas expense.
  4. The off-site coordinator can answer all questions.

Those interested in volunteering should contact off-site coordinators Renee and Clint McKinley at c-r.mckinley@sbcglobal.net.

Donations
Don Hargis, CSBC Disaster Relief coordinator, said individuals or churches not able to serve on a team but wanting to participate in this vital ministry may help with the expenses of a team.

“California has been hard hit in recent years with floods and wildfires. And California Southern Baptists have fielded teams for other relief efforts in the United States and overseas. Our Disaster Relief funds are depleted and stretched thin,” Hargis stressed.

Donations can be made online or by sending a check, payable to CSBC and earmarked for “Disaster Relief,” to 678 E. Shaw Ave., Fresno CA 93710-7704.

Hargis said the “prayers and financial support” of California Southern Baptists over the years have been instrumental in fulfilling the Great Commission and the Great Commandment “and will continue to do so as we give a cup of cold water in Jesus’ name.”
