I distinctly remember singing "Deep and Wide" when I was a child in Vacation Bible School in Panama. We all remember the words: "deep and wide, deep and wide, there's a fountain flowing deep and wide; deep and wide, deep and wide, there's a fountain flowing deep and wide."
I'm not sure I learned the theological implications of that song in VBS, but I had a good time singing it with gusto!
VBS holds fond memories for many. After all these years, it remains one of the most effective evangelism tools in reaching children for Christ. Many children are enrolled in VBS because of caring parents or grandparents who want to see their children learn truths about life that come from the Word of God.
Parents and grandparents play an important role in the lives of children and their spiritual development. I discover this each time I'm around my granddaughters and grandson. As I look at my grandchildren, I am thankful to God for my parents and great-grandparents who prayed for me.
Recently, one of my sisters and I were talking about our family. My sister reminded me that my great-grandmother was praying until her last breath. When asked what she was doing, she answered, "I'm praying for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren." I was the object of her prayers. What an amazing thought.
My children and their children are in that link. I never met my great-grandmother, but daily I am thankful for the saints of yesterday who set the example and prayed for the salvation of their heirs.
The Bible tells us to teach God's Word to our children when we sit at home, walk along the road, lie down and get up. And He promises that if we "train up a child in the way he should go, when he is old, he will not depart from it."
In this very busy world, I encourage you to remember your journey. You did not make it here alone. Many of our successes are because of faithful parents and grandparents who put their faith and prayers into practice, and to our phenomenal God who answered their prayers.
Won't you join me in teaching our children and grandchildren about the reality of that "fountain flowing deep and wide" which is filled with God's love, forgiveness and grace?
