Perspective - July 2010

The Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Orlando is now history. The report of The Great Commission Resurgence task force was adopted by messengers.

However, many unanswered questions remain and only time and further actions by the SBC Executive Committee and agencies will reveal the true implications of what was voted on.

Even though King Solomon recorded in Ecclesiastes that there is nothing new under the sun, change is always about us. Every new face on the horizon brings new ideas. One of the challenges we have faced and will continue to face until the implementation begins, is the rumor-mill and the blame-game culture in which we live.

In Ephesians 6:12, Paul wrote: "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Please remember that our struggle is of a spiritual nature for the souls of people, not against our brothers and sisters in Christ.

As I sat in meetings over these months and listened to incomplete information, misinformation and disinformation, it was my faith in God that kept me moving forward.

To imply that I or California Southern Baptist Convention had "lost" the Great Commission was a struggle for me to accept. I know exactly where it is: in my heart and in the souls of our churches.

My passion to reach the lost and make disciples has not changed. The cry of my heart has been that every man and woman, boy and girl in California hear and respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and find a church where they can learn to do it again and again.

My mission - and I believe the mission of California Southern Baptist churches - remains true to the Great Commission. With more intensity, aggressiveness, love and passion we must not let detractors, rumors or other factors stop us. The Great Commission begins here. We must never forget that our primary mission field is where God has planted us. Let's go and share throughout our state to win 33 million unsaved souls for Christ.
