Perspective - July 2013
I enjoy reading the Book of Acts. It is such a clear picture of what every Christian should be about - proclaiming the name of Jesus.

Almost at the onset one is captivated by the bold witness of Peter at Pentecost, Peter and John before the Sanhedrin, and Stephen also testifying before the court. The Book of Acts exemplifies what the Christian life should be - evangelism and missions.

In Acts 5:42, the New International Version records, "Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah."

First century Christians were serious about keeping the "main thing the main thing." Their commitment, determination and accomplishments as followers of Christ are so inspirational and impactful. They truly are examples for us to follow as we attempt to reach our state for Christ.

As we face the challenges of our day, I encourage each California Southern Baptist to clearly understand his calling daily and not be swayed by or get wrapped up in issues that many times hinder our witness and keep us from sharing Christ. Every week I am asked to support all kinds of issues. At times I am overwhelmed by the agendas of so many crying for my voice and support.

I don't know about you, but I'm continually bombarded by people wanting me to join their cause. My e-mail address and phone number seem to have found their way to the "lists" of those engaged in all sorts of battles. There are many serious issues around us and we need to be engaged in the process, but so often these challenges take priority over the intentional and frequent sharing of the Good News of Jesus Christ and His power of personal and community transformation.

We need to heed Paul's admonition to the Ephesians and "put on the full armor of God" so we can stand firm in our world today and witness effectively to those who have never heard or responded to the message of Christ.

I believe California Southern Baptists are like those first century trailblazers in many ways as we start new churches, as our churches evangelize and as we minister to persons in communities and resort areas. All we do at California Southern Baptist Convention is targeted to help churches share Jesus in a state where only about 10 percent of the population claims to have a relationship with Christ.

Let us never stop proclaiming and living out the gospel in California.
