Spring is one of my favorite seasons. The beauty of the flowers and budding of the trees combined with the freshness in the air remind me of the rebirth and the joy of life. However, I wish the temperature of this spring season were average instead of 10-20 degrees above normal!
Springtime also is filled with fun and joyous occasions such as spring break and Easter when we celebrate the resurrection of Christ.
I find it interesting that when the Earth itself is beginning to show new life and the Christian community has celebrated Easter, we find our society, our culture being bombarded with diversions. Headlines in newspapers, radio and television herald the latest tragedy instead of miraculous stories of faith.
There have always been and always will be skeptics about Jesus and His authenticity. Philosophers, scientists and others attempt to explain away what the Christian body believes because of the Bible.
However, I believe the Bible (my "owner's manual") is the inerrant Word of God that provides guidance and answers for every issue of life that I - or anyone else - face. I love II Timothy 3:16-17: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
What blessing that we have such a practical handbook!
In Revelation 22 the Bible exhorts us to not add or take away from the Bible. Included are strong warnings about what will happen to those who do so. In that same chapter an angel reveals to John that "these words are trustworthy and true." What a comfort in a world that sometimes cares nothing about trustworthiness or truth.
Here are a few of my favorite scriptures about God's Word:
John 1:1 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Psalm 119:11 - I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:105 - Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
Isaiah 40:8 - The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.
We are still living in times when Christians, for the most part, have the opportunity to exhibit their faith, not only in Jesus Christ, but in the Word of God, which answers all the questions any novel, movie, scientist or skeptic could raise. With faith and spirituality being such prominent topics in culture today, I encourage believers to permit neither the "scoffers" nor the world to define their faith in God and His Word.
This is a time for us as California Southern Baptists to affirm scripture and proclaim it with boldness and power.
