Perspective - April 2007

I love Fresno in the springtime. The warming temperatures bring nature to life in an abundant way and create a colorful array of God's creation. Plants burst from their slumber and begin to show their newness of life by producing green leaves and flowers in vast arrays of color.

I also enjoy and believe Easter is the most special of our religious holidays. Without Easter and the resurrection of our Savior there would be no celebration.

In recent days there has been much hoopla about Jesus Christ. There is the news of the "supposed" discovery of his family tomb and ossuaries. All over television these days I'm seeing announcements about the Jesus Anti-Christ - Jose de Jesus.

He is a 60-year-old Puerto Rican now preaching in Houston who told ABC News, "Before the presence of God, there's no more sin." He preaches that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ means "sin no longer exists and people now can do no wrong in God's eyes."

Many are captivated by these news stories. However, I am not. I believe we need to hold strong to II Timothy 1:12-13 during these days: " ... Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day. What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus."

During this time of confusion, let us remember to hold fast to the Christ in whom we believe and let us declare His power to save a lost world. We need not be ashamed of our public expression of love and devotion to Christ. We must continue to tell the world that we know Him and He is able to provide purpose, joy and hope.

As a fellowship of churches called California Southern Baptist Convention, we must continue to reach every man, woman, boy and girl in our state. Pray the Father will give California Southern Baptists wisdom as we seek to impact not only our state, but also our nation and world.
