A'ohe hana nui ka alu'ia" is a Hawaiian saying which translated means: "no task too big when done together by all."
I recently came across this saying while on vacation. It reminds me of California Southern Baptists and the ministry God has called us to be about in the great state in which we live.
As believers and followers of Christ we know there is no task too big for God. Whether we work in His mission field or not, He can accomplish anything He desires. However, I believe His desire is for California Southern Baptists to join Him. The best way for us to accomplish that is together - all of us!
"Together" is a powerful word. It eliminates individuality, self-glorification, personal agendas and many other issues. Over the years I have seen mission endeavors disintegrate because of division. One of Satan's greatest strategies is to keep God's people from working together to accomplish the task of reaching the world for Christ.
September is California Missions Month. During this time we encourage churches to pray and take a special offering for California missions. Just as in the early church, we each have our tasks as illustrated in I Corinthians 3:6-8. However, we must never forget that God is the one who blesses; He blesses those who work together.
California is one of the most crucial mission fields in the world. One must consider the influence California has on worldwide events, through media and culture. With millions of unchurched and lost Californians, we must not neglect our task of working together so the gospel can penetrate every heart of our families, neighbors, friends and even our enemies.
I believe the transforming power of Christ can reach the lost and make disciples. At the end of the day, I often review the contacts I've had and rejoice in what I've heard about what many are doing to increase God's Kingdom.
During this month focused on California missions I pray and urge California Southern Baptists and their churches to look at ways to impact the communities in which they minister. Please pray for the more than 33 million unchurched Californians.
And pray that all California Southern Baptists would unite in the task of reaching our state, nation and world for Christ.
