Blogs from the Team - Mosaic, L.A. serves in Haiti
We went to Carrefour today. It's an outlying community of PaP. Some of the worst poverty I've ever seen - trash burning in the streets; pigs and stray dogs are playmates.

Today was the last of three days of national prayer and fasting for the country. Churches were overflowing with people and emotion. Our team was shocked and amazed by this response. Truly the people are finding hope in the midst of their despair. They don't have a plan, but have their sights set on the future. They don't have empowerment yet, but they are grateful to be alive.

We went to one of these church services, then set up a clinic and treated people for four hours. We saw around 100 patients - everything from head lice to severe dehydration to PTSD. It's amazing what happens to a culture with no health care infrastructure.

We all noted that it's as if they wanted our presence and smiles as much as they wanted our medicine. Any conversation made them feel cared for. Many people we met had lost loved ones in the quake.

New strategy today with the clinic: more space, more structure, more patients. Hope to see over 180 today.

At the church where we're working another team fixed the well! Spring water from a prototype invention that costs $17 to make - amazing what the mind can conjure.

We're setting up our clinic and our patients bring us in with singing. I can't describe the enduring spirit of these people. They go beyond survival - a lesson for our team. We thought we were coming to give, but have received immeasurably more ...

We're seeing so many with crisis-related stress that we're doing a quick seminar about stress and how to handle the changes. We're most interested in giving them permission to talk to each other about what they're going through. Some have lost their whole families in the quake and haven't spoken about it in a month. That makes you sick. It's not perfect but we're trying ...
