Quiz yourself about your church's missions climate

Have you ever stepped back and analyzed the missions climate in your church? Many churches have no regular, sustained emphasis on missions. Participating only in specific missions offerings does not create a lasting missions climate. Answer the following questions to give you a better understanding of what your church may need to do to become more actively engaged in missions.

In your opinion ...

  1. Does your church have a missions climate? How would you rate the promotion of missions? On a scale of 1 to 7 (1 being none or low; 7 best/high).
  2. Does your church demonstrate an interest in missions education? Are there any age-level mission groups? Is there an understanding that preschoolers, children, students and adults can all learn about and support missions? Using the same 1 to 7 scale rate your observation.
  3. Does your pastor show an interest in missions? Does he preach missions sermons? Does he support missions offerings from the pulpit? Does he participate in mission trips and encourage others to do the same? Does he recommend that women get involved in women’s missions groups? Observe and rate your church from 1 to 7.
  4. Does your church have a heart for starting new churches? Has the church ever sponsored a new church or mission? Is there an allocation in the church budget for helping other churches as they start new churches? Do church members ever hear about new church starts? Use the same rating scale.
  5. Does your church participate in reaching other language groups and other parts of your state for Christ?
  6. Does your church participate in any efforts to reach North America for Christ?
  7. Has your church adopted an unreached people group? (this can be done through the International Mission Board.)
  8. Does your church give a percentage of its budget through the Cooperative Program? What is that percentage? How can you become a CP advocate? If your church no longer gives through this missions avenue, why?
  9. Does your church give a percentage of its budget to the local Baptist association? What percentage? Does your pastor participate in associational events and emphases?
  10. Does your church give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions? Did it reach last year’s goals?
